The biggest mistake in the UAE is going to the Abu Dhabi embassy with a visa application: all visa applications are filed with the German Consulate General in Dubai, and its passport and visa section has a separate entrance in Jumeirah 1 on Street 8 — not in the consulate building itself. And one precise numerical condition settles competence: your Emirates ID must have been issued at least six months before the date of application.

Abu Dhabi or Dubai? The rule that saves you a whole day
Both missions are German, but their functions differ. The embassy in Abu Dhabi is the diplomatic mission accredited to the state. Visa applications, however, are filed with the Consulate General in Dubai — the official page states that you can only apply for a visa at the German Consulate General in Dubai if your habitual residence is in the UAE.
And within Dubai itself there are two addresses: the consulate building on Street 14a, and the passport and visa section with its own entrance in Jumeirah 1 on Street 8. Reaching “the consulate” does not necessarily mean you have reached the right section.
How to apply, step by step
- Check the habitual residence condition firstThis is the first filter and it admits no interpretation: your habitual residence counts as being in the UAE if your Emirates ID was issued at least six months before the date of application. If you cannot prove that, the consulate in Dubai is not competent and you must apply to the mission for your actual place of residence.
- Establish the visa typeUp to ninety days in any hundred and eighty: a Schengen visa (type C). More than ninety days for work, study or family reunification: a national visa (type D), which grants residence rights in Germany and free travel across the Schengen states including airport transit. If unsure, use the official visa navigator.
- Try the online route before the paper oneMost visa categories — including family reunification — are eligible for online application through the Consular Services Portal. Its practical advantage is that you upload your documents and are told whether they are complete, which makes the in-person appointment faster and less likely to fail on a missing paper.
- Go to the right address inside DubaiThe passport and visa section has its own entrance in Jumeirah 1 on Street 8, which is not the consulate building on Street 14a. Check the address on your appointment confirmation before you set off.
- Prepare documents by purpose, not by a general listEach purpose has its own procedure and list: work, study, research, language course, recognition of qualifications, family reunification in its forms, marriage in Germany. Missing documents are a leading cause of refusal — and since remonstration was abolished, correcting one is harder.
- Beware of fraudulent payment messagesThe consulate publishes an explicit warning: it will never ask you to make any payment online, through links, applications or the like. Any message asking for that in its name is a fraud.
The European Entry/Exit System (EES) is now live
A change that affects every traveller to Europe and is still missing from most guidance: the digital Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026, and it is used at the external borders of all EU member states with the exception of Cyprus and Ireland.
In practice your entries and exits are now recorded digitally rather than by relying on passport stamps, so counting your days inside the Schengen area is no longer approximate. Check your day balance before every trip: exceeding ninety days is now far easier to detect.
The remonstration procedure has been abolished — this changes what you do after a refusal
The German Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure against visa refusals worldwide with effect from 1 July 2025. If your application is refused after that date, do not send a remonstration to the mission — it will not be processed. The remaining legal route is an action before the Administrative Court in Berlin, which must be in German and involves court costs. And one door stays open always: submitting a fresh application. Which is why filing a complete file the first time now matters more than it ever did.
