What wastes a whole day in Kuwait is going to the embassy building to file a visa application: the embassy is in Al Hamra Tower in Sharq, while the visa and consular section is in Symphony Tower 2 in Salmiya — two different buildings in two different districts. And a second fact few people write down: residents of Yemen may file a national visa application with the German Embassy in Kuwait.

- The curriculum vitae page states that Dr Dirk Rotenberg took over as head of mission on 1 July 2026, while the head-of-mission field on the address page still carries an earlier name. Both are official; the CV page is the newer one.
Two routes: VFS for Schengen, the visa section directly for national visas
VFS Global operates the embassy’s Schengen visa application centre, and short-stay applications go there. National visas, by contrast, are filed directly at the embassy’s visa section — the official page says so expressly — or started electronically through the Consular Services Portal.
Competence is defined by habitual residence: the embassy processes applications from Kuwaiti nationals and those habitually resident in Kuwait, and if it emerges that your habitual residence is outside Kuwait your application will not be processed here — with the exception of residents of Yemen on the national visa route.
How to apply, step by step
- Establish the visa type and your habitual residenceUp to ninety days: Schengen through the VFS Global centre. Longer than ninety days for study, work or family reunification: a national visa directly at the visa section. And make sure your habitual residence is in Kuwait — or in Yemen for the national visa.
- Go to the right addressThe visa and consular section is in Salmiya in Symphony Tower 2, not in Al Hamra Tower. Go to the wrong building and you lose a whole day.
- For the national visa: start online if you canThe official page offers an online route for the national visa alongside the paper one. Start there, because it reduces the formal errors that cost a whole appointment.
- Bring an interpreter if you do not speak Arabic, English or HindiA condition the embassy states expressly and that is rarely written down: if you do not speak one of those three languages, you must bring an interpreter to the visa appointment.
- Send no document by email before your appointmentThe embassy asks that documents not be sent to the visa section unless requested — they are not stored and cannot be added to your file later. Bring the complete file with you.
- Call inside the right windowThe visa section’s dedicated line works Sunday to Thursday between eight and eleven in the morning only. For written enquiries use the official contact form rather than direct email.
- If you hold a Kuwaiti diplomatic or special passport: check firstHolders of the Kuwaiti diplomatic (red) and special (green) passports may travel to Germany without a prior visa if the passport is biometric with an electronic chip and the stay does not exceed ninety days per half-year.
Two changes that affect many readers — both announced on the embassy’s page:
1) Residents of Syria: as of 1 June 2026, applicants resident or habitually resident in Syria may only apply for a Schengen or national visa at the visa sections of the German embassies in Amman and Beirut and the Consulate General in Erbil. Appointments already allocated or booked by 31 May 2026 remain valid, and anyone who registered after that date must re-register. Registrations cannot be transferred between missions. If you have lived outside Syria for at least six months and hold a valid residence permit there, you must apply in your country of residence.
2) Family reunification with beneficiaries of subsidiary protection: the embassy’s page carries a notice headed “Suspension of family reunification with beneficiaries of subsidiary protection”. If your case is of that kind, do not build on older information — read the official notice and confirm your position in writing before committing.
The remonstration procedure has been abolished — this changes what you do after a refusal
The German Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure against visa refusals worldwide with effect from 1 July 2025. If your application is refused after that date, do not send a remonstration to the mission — it will not be processed. The remaining legal route is an action before the Administrative Court in Berlin, which must be in German and involves court costs. And one door stays open always: submitting a fresh application. Which is why filing a complete file the first time now matters more than it ever did.
