Rule one: no consular service without an appointment

Amman requires appointments for the listed consular services. Its 1 July 2026 booking page distinguishes portal categories, mission-system categories and VFS for legalisation of Jordanian documents and certified copies. This does not establish that every later step or passport return happens in the embassy without a service provider.

Mission registration and appointment booking are free. The mission warns against uncontracted agencies. Visa fees and services of providers named in official instructions are separate; not every legitimate service cost is an appointment charge.

A one-hour phone window, twice a week

This is the practical detail that costs people the most time. For telephone contact with the legal and consular section the embassy defines a narrow window: Monday and Wednesday, nine to ten in the morning.

In an emergency outside office hours you can reach the duty officer: call the embassy's general number and follow the recorded instructions; you may also send the duty officer a text message. Visa enquiries are never answered on that channel.

The visa categories the Amman section handles

The choice starts with the length of your stay: a Schengen visa for a short stay of no more than ninety days, or a national visa for a stay longer than that. The categories the embassy publishes then branch out:

General family reunification — the usual route for family members.
Reunification with a family member recognised as a refugee — a separate route with different conditions; do not confuse it with the one above.
Work and vocational training.
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) — for job-seeking.
Recognition procedures under Section 16d of the Residence Act — the entry visa to complete the recognition of a professional qualification, the category many people search for as "16d visa".
Study, a language course, school attendance or training.
A visa under a Landesaufnahmeprogramm (a federal state admission programme).
Return visa.

Use the matching category: the booking instructions prohibit entry for a booking in the wrong category. That does not prove automatic visa refusal or fee loss in every case.

How to apply, step by step

Identify the visa category preciselyStart with the duration (under ninety days or more) and then the purpose. If you are a family member of a recognised refugee, your route differs from general family reunification — confirm before booking.

For new applications from 1 June 2026, Damascus directs residents or habitual residents of Syria to Amman, Beirut or Erbil, according to category. Appointments assigned or booked by 31 May 2026 remain at the former mission under current German instructions; an open registration without an interview date is not the same appointment. At least six months abroad with a valid local permit means the residence-country mission, which can be Amman or Beirut itself. Arabic and English are listed for Jordanian public offices; that does not determine mission correspondence or remove category-specific language requirements.

The remonstration procedure has been abolished — this changes what you do after a refusal

The German Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure against visa refusals worldwide with effect from 1 July 2025. If your application is refused after that date, do not send a remonstration to the mission — it will not be processed. The remaining legal route is an action before the Administrative Court in Berlin, which must be in German and involves court costs. And one door stays open always: submitting a fresh application. Which is why filing a complete file the first time now matters more than it ever did.
