Algiers Schengen applications are filed with VFS Global and decided by the mission. National visas follow the category: digital portal for specified family, study and qualified-work cases, other lists for specified categories. An older booking page is neither a universal channel nor an appointment guarantee.

Two entirely separate routes: VFS for Schengen, the embassy for national visas

Schengen uses VFS with the decision remaining at the embassy. Current German/French national guidance specifies the portal for qualified work, Blue Card, Opportunity Card, study, training and family reunification. Au-pair/volunteers retain mission lists, re-entry requires arranged contact. Check category first.

VFS’s Schengen instructions are not a universal national-visa portal, and the mission system is not every national category’s current channel. Read the national category instead of using parallel lists.

How to book your appointment, step by step

1. Settle the visa type firstNinety days or fewer in the Schengen area with Germany as the main destination: a Schengen visa. More than ninety days for a defined purpose: a national visa. Everything after this step depends on that answer.
2. For Schengen: complete the form and use the right checklistThe embassy publishes separate checklists by purpose of travel — family visit, business, medical treatment — and missing documents or certificates can alone lead to refusal. Choose the checklist that matches your purpose exactly, not a general one.
3. For Schengen follow VFS and available appointmentsCommission guidance permits applications from six months before travel and normally at least 15 days before. Algiers’s 2023 Arabic page still says three months; this does not establish a current exemption from the European rule. No early appointment is guaranteed.
4. For national visas start with the portal categoryListed categories use the portal; wait for successful preliminary checks and the booking notification before booking. Au-pair/volunteers use mission lists, re-entry uses prior contact. Free registration is not approval.
5. For family reunification preserve the earlier entryNew portal-list registration only if you are not already registered. Earlier entries through 28 April 2026 are processed without duplicate registration solely because the channel changed. Read the system’s data requirements for every applicant and child; registration is not an immediate appointment.
6. For the Opportunity Card establish the route firstSection 20a(3) distinguishes Fachkraft and points routes. Six points apply to the points route, not every Fachkraft, so a qualified worker is not excluded by points alone. Self-check is advisory; the current Card channel is the portal and preliminary checks.
7. Submit documents in the required channel onlyDo not email unsolicited documents to the visa section. Digital categories nevertheless require uploading documents to the portal for checks before an appointment. Follow the category’s originals/copies instructions at attendance.

The Opportunity Card from Algeria: a condition few people mention

Section 20a(3) separates Fachkraft from the points route, so six points are not universal. On the points route section 20a(4) requires a qualifying credential under its rules, including recognition in its issuing country and training duration where applicable, plus German A1 or English B2. Partial German recognition is not a universal requirement. Secure livelihood and category-specific documents/insurance remain; this is a targeted summary, not full eligibility assessment.

The 13 June 2024 Arabic Card page recommends self-check/six points and gives 10 months. It does not remove the statutory Fachkraft route or current portal process. Check the credential, route and current checklist; self-check decides no visa.

The remonstration procedure has been abolished — this changes what you do after a refusal

The German Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure against visa refusals worldwide with effect from 1 July 2025. If your application is refused after that date, do not send a remonstration to the mission — it will not be processed. The remaining legal route is an action before the Administrative Court in Berlin, which must be in German and involves court costs. And one door stays open always: submitting a fresh application. Which is why filing a complete file the first time now matters more than it ever did.
