The German Embassy in Baghdad has an arrangement you will not find at most missions in the region: collecting passports and visas needs no appointment. But note a second point — its jurisdiction does not cover the whole of Iraq.

Collection without an appointment — and what it does not cover
The embassy states that passports and visas may be collected without a scheduled appointment, Sunday to Thursday between half past one and three in the afternoon.
Do not generalise that, though: the appointment exemption applies to collection. Filing applications and other consular services have their own arrangements and their own booking system on the embassy site. Check which category your business falls into before you set off.
Central Iraq only — the north belongs to Erbil
The embassy defines its administrative and consular district as central Iraq, and the German mission in Iraq also maintains a separate Consulate General with its own page and its own contact form.
That Consulate General in Erbil is also one of three officially designated places to receive applications from residents of Syria, alongside Amman and Beirut. Establish your habitual residence first, then the mission competent for it — applying to a mission that is not competent means a formal refusal and a lost fee.

The remonstration procedure has been abolished — this changes what you do after a refusal
The German Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure against visa refusals worldwide with effect from 1 July 2025. If your application is refused after that date, do not send a remonstration to the mission — it will not be processed. The remaining legal route is an action before the Administrative Court in Berlin, which must be in German and involves court costs. And one door stays open always: submitting a fresh application. Which is why filing a complete file the first time now matters more than it ever did.
