Morocco is one of the easier countries in this file for one reason: you do not have to travel to Rabat. Schengen applications are filed at TLScontact in Rabat, Marrakesh or Tangier. But reunification is a national visa, not a Schengen one — its route runs through the embassy itself by prior appointment, and its time windows are among the narrowest in the region.

The first mistake: taking a reunification file to TLScontact
This is the most common mistake in Morocco specifically, because TLScontact is the better-known name. But the company receives Schengen applications only. Reunification is a national visa, and its route runs through the German Embassy in Rabat by appointment.
The practical consequence: someone living in Marrakesh or Tangier can file a Schengen application close to home, but a reunification file requires an appointment in Rabat. Plan the journey on that basis, not on whichever office is nearest.
The language condition: what the text says and what the mission applies
Section 30 of the Residence Act requires the arriving spouse to be able to communicate in German “at least in a simple manner” — and names neither A1 nor any other level. Missions apply it in practice as the A1 equivalent and ask for a certificate from a recognised institute, and the certificates accepted differ between missions.
The law provides express exemptions: illness or a physical, mental or psychological disability; manifestly low integration needs; nationals of visa-exempt states; certain researcher and specialist permits; and exceptional circumstances that make learning the language unreasonable. The exemption is not applied automatically — ask for it expressly and attach the evidence.

- Check the closure list before bookingThe embassy publishes an annual list combining German and Moroccan holidays, and some Hijri dates are listed as approximate. A closure on your day means booking again from scratch.
- Prepare the language certificate and sworn translation earlyThey are the two longest items and neither depends on the embassy.
- If you need a legalisation, count the narrow windowLegalisations run from eight until ten in the morning only, and some services are not offered on Tuesday. Arriving outside the window means being refused entry.
- Attend with a complete file the first timeSince remonstration was abolished in July 2025, correcting a refusal runs through the Berlin Administrative Court or a fresh application — both far longer than preparing a missing paper.
⚠️ Read this before booking: the statutory suspension does not depend on your nationality but on your relative’s status in Germany. Subsidiary protection ⇒ reunification is suspended until 24 July 2027, and the only path is a hardship report by email to info.fap.hardship@iom.int stating the reasons. Refugee status, or a work, study or Blue Card permit ⇒ the suspension does not concern you.
