Family reunification from Egypt: Cairo jurisdiction and current visa routes

Cairo’s national-visa page dated 6 October 2026 names ordinary residence in Egypt, and residence in Yemen, Sudan and Gaza, within its remit. Older pages give a different list including Libya and excluding Sudanese protection-family cases. We therefore do not repeat that old exclusion as an absolute current rule. Check the current category instructions before booking or travel. Syrian residents have transition and existing-appointment rules explained below.

The six-month rule: where to file if you are outside your own country

Ordinary residence, visa category and current mission instructions determine where to apply. An older Cairo page generally mentions six months’ residence in Egypt; this is not an automatic guarantee of jurisdiction or acceptance for every nationality and case.

The current Cairo page specifically says that people living outside Syria for at least six months with a valid local residence permit apply at the mission in that country. If that country is Egypt, it may be Cairo. The instruction does not exclude Cairo simply because the applicant is Syrian.

In the Syrian-residence transition, registrations or bookings are not automatically moved to another mission. However, appointments already assigned or booked by 31 May 2026 at former missions remain valid. An open registration without a specific attendance appointment does not provide that exception. Sudan: older and newer official instructions conflict

Cairo’s 24 May 2023 page excludes protection-family applications from residents of Sudan. In contrast, Nairobi’s protection-family page dated 17 February 2026 directs Sudanese nationals residing in Sudan to Addis Ababa and Cairo only; Cairo’s 6 October 2026 national-visa page includes Sudan without that exclusion. These official instructions conflict across dates. We do not confirm the old Cairo exclusion or promise acceptance of every case. Verify the category, sponsor’s status and current registration route with the mission before travel.

Cairo’s current national-visa instructions place ordinary family booking directly with the embassy. A family moving concurrently with an applicant in one of the named employment, study or other TLScontact categories is directed to book its family appointment at TLS as well. Choose the current category rather than copying someone else’s route or moving a booking.

Ordinary consular services — passports, certificates, legalisations — are a different matter: there Cairo covers Egypt and Sudan together, with no carve-out.

The steps from Egypt

1. Identify jurisdiction and booking category firstCheck ordinary residence and the current national-visa list. Sudanese nationals resident in Sudan should not rely solely on the 2023 exclusion: Nairobi’s 2026 instructions direct them to Cairo or Addis Ababa. Verify the category route before travel.
2. Check your relative’s status in GermanyThe section 36a subsidiary-protection route is suspended through the end of 23 July 2027; sections 22 and 23 remain unaffected. Refugee, work, study and Blue Card routes are not subject to this particular suspension, but retain their own requirements.
3. Do not phone the embassy about a visaThe published number states expressly that it gives no visa information. Use the visa channels published on the mission's own site.
4. Count the Egyptian working week, not the German oneSunday to Wednesday, with Thursday a half day — Friday and Saturday closed. Planning on a European week loses two days out of every week.
5. Check language and translation documents firstRead the category checklist and language exemptions before obtaining a certificate. Check translation rules and accepted translators before paying. Families do not all need the same certificate.
6. Check an existing appointment before re-registeringRegistrations are not automatically moved between missions. In the Syrian-residence transition, appointments already assigned or booked by 31 May 2026 remain valid; an open registration without a specific appointment does not provide that exception.

The current national-visa page names ordinary residence in Egypt, and residence in Yemen, Sudan and Gaza. Older pages differ; nationality or six months alone is not a guarantee. Check current category instructions.

I am Syrian and live in Egypt — where do I file?

For at least six months’ residence in Egypt with a valid local residence permit, the Cairo instructions direct someone living outside Syria to the mission in the country of residence. New applications by Syrian residents from 1 June 2026 use Amman, Beirut or Erbil. Appointments already assigned or booked by 31 May 2026 at former missions remain valid.

Does Cairo accept applications from residents of Sudan?

Nairobi’s 17 February 2026 protection-family instructions direct Sudanese nationals resident in Sudan to Cairo and Addis Ababa only; Cairo’s 6 October 2026 national-visa page includes Sudan. This conflicts with a Cairo exclusion published in 2023, which we do not treat as an absolute current ban. Check your category, sponsor’s status and current instructions before travel.

Can my appointment be transferred to another mission?

The embassy does not automatically transfer a registration or booking. In the Syrian-residence transition, appointments already assigned or booked by 31 May 2026 at former missions remain valid; open registration without a specific appointment does not provide that exception.

What are the embassy's hours?

Sunday to Wednesday from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon, and Thursday from half past eight to half past one — an Egyptian working week, with Friday and Saturday closed.

Can I phone the embassy about my visa?

No. The published number states expressly that it gives no information on visa matters; the dedicated channels are published on the mission's site.
