Family-reunification time includes preparation or online preliminary checks, the appointment queue, and processing after submission. Section 30 gives no uniform decision time. A mission may publish an appointment or processing estimate: check what the figure measures and when its clock starts, rather than adding overlapping stages or treating it as a guaranteed date.
What the missions actually publish
- Tunis — family reunification
- About 5 months for a family appointment in the German and French national-visa pages read on 12 October 2026; both show publication on 29 June 2026.
- Tunis — stated employment category
- More than 12 months for the employment category stated there, including au pair and voluntary social year. Do not transfer this figure to every training or accelerated category.
- Tunis — source conflict and registration
- The Arabic FAQ published on 7 March 2023 still gives 9 months for families, whereas the newer national-visa pages give 5. This is a source discrepancy, not a promised 5–9 month range. New family waiting-list registration has used the online portal since 15 January 2026; earlier places are preserved and the mission says not to register again.
- Algiers — family figures and source conflict
- About 10 months from waiting-list registration in the German and French national-visa pages. The general booking page and Arabic family page show about 7 months. Do not combine these as a guaranteed range; follow current category instructions and ask the mission about a conflict.
- Algiers — other categories after checks
- There is no single figure for all national visas. Algiers lists about 4 months for certain au pair, voluntary-service and standalone language cases; work/training appointments generally within 2 weeks and study/opportunity-card appointments within 2 months after online checks and the booking link. These are not family waiting times.
- Figures and booking order
- Appointment estimates change. Algiers requires completed online checks and notification before booking for portal categories. Older waiting-list entries up to 28 April 2026 are processed without re-registration.
Three different durations that everyone conflates
First: the appointment queue. Its clock may start at waiting-list registration, or booking may follow online preliminary checks. Record the starting point your mission specifies; the queue is not necessarily every file’s longest stage.
Second: processing after submission, which can include extra evidence or checks. The Tunis national-visa page publishes a processing estimate of up to 3 months depending on travel purpose. It is separate from the appointment queue and is not a promise for every application.
Third: foreigners-authority approval where required. This can occur within application processing, so it is not always another duration to add on top. Document exchanges, checks and responses between authorities affect the procedure.
Compare personal timelines only when you know the mission, category, registration or online-check date and submission date. A year without a starting point is not a planning measure. Section 75 VwGO provides conditional remedies for administrative inaction; it does not guarantee a visa after 3 months.
Reduce preparation and follow-up mistakes
- Follow your category’s registration and checking orderPrepare during the waiting-list stage where the instructions permit it. For a route requiring online checks, do not book before completion and notification. Do not duplicate an older registration whose place is preserved.
- Check how your family must be registeredAlgiers’ general booking page requires an appointment per person, including children. Other portals or categories can use family-group registration. Follow your route and ensure every applicant is included instead of assuming four separate registrations everywhere.
- Check language and translation rules before payingRead the category checklist, exemptions and translation/authentication requirements. Start necessary items early, but not every family needs a language certificate and translation is not always the longest task.
- Prepare against the official checklistRecord missing items, requests for evidence and deadlines. Missing papers can delay a decision; they do not automatically restart the whole queue. Follow the mission’s instructions for your case.
- Distinguish statutory accelerated routes from priority requestsTunis says ordinary special appointments cannot be granted and advance-appointment enquiries are not answered. Algiers allows very rare exceptional cases; specified categories also have accelerated routes. A commercial promise is not evidence that an intermediary can secure priority.
- Follow up with the file number through official channelsCheck requests for evidence and which authority is awaiting a response; retain correspondence. The sponsor can contact the foreigners authority subject to the required authorisation, but is not universally the only person allowed to ask. Seek qualified advice on section 75 if delay is unjustified.
A useful timeline records registration, online checks, attendance, submission and evidence requests separately, including who awaits whose response. Recheck the mission before financial or employment commitments. The Tunis and Algiers figures are dated examples, not a forecast for your file or all Germany.

Section 30 gives no uniform duration. On 12 October 2026 the national-visa pages showed about 5 months for a Tunis family appointment and 10 for Algiers, with different figures on older or general pages. Processing is separate and may include foreigners-authority approval.
What is the difference between the appointment wait and the examination?
Appointment timing concerns attendance, sometimes following online checks. Processing concerns the submitted application and decision. Foreigners-authority approval can occur within processing, so do not automatically add the two. Check what each official figure measures.
Should I wait until my documents are ready before booking?
Follow the category: where online completion and notification are required, do not book earlier. Prepare during a waiting list where the route allows it, and preserve old registrations when the mission says not to repeat them.
Is one appointment enough for the whole family?
The rule depends on the mission, portal and category. Algiers’ general page requires an appointment per applicant; that does not prove every portal requires separate registration per family member. Include everyone as your route specifies.
Can the appointment be expedited?
Tunis excludes ordinary special appointments; Algiers describes very rare exceptions and specified categories have accelerated procedures. Payment alone cannot guarantee priority. Verify the official basis of any proposed route.
Why does the duration differ between countries?
Categories, portals, queue starting points, application volumes and checks differ. Even mission pages can disagree; this page identifies dates and sources instead of turning discrepancies into a guaranteed range.
